Requirements and structure of large siren warning systems for public warning
Climate change is leading to an increase in storms, strong winds and floods. Earthquakes are shaking many parts of the world. The political situation is becoming more unstable. Many countries are therefore modernising their infrastructure to warn the population or are starting to set up or expand their national warning systems. Siren warning systems are an indispensable and effective component for quickly alerting the population. However, modern electronic sirens can not only warn, but also inform thanks to their voice announcement capability. For example, clear rules of behaviour can be communicated to the population. The development of such a nationwide siren warning system often takes several years and places high demands on the planning and experience of the siren manufacturer. What is a siren warning system, what components does it consist of and what are the special requirements for national siren systems for warning the population?
What is a siren warning system?
A siren consists of the siren horns and the corresponding siren cabinet. Each of our ECN-D electronic sirens has a certain number of horns. The number of horns is determined by the required sound power. This is based on the site planning and a sound forecast. The electronic siren is powered by batteries. This ensures that the siren is operational even if the mains voltage is interrupted.
These electronic sirens are connected to a control centre. Such a control centre is the heart of a siren warning system. It also includes components for monitoring, controlling and triggering the sirens. This can be a touch panel and a triggering option directly on the siren in the siren cabinet, a remote control panel for remote triggering or a software-based monitoring and control station with a connected triggering option. In the case of large siren networks, it often makes sense to have several control centres or several control stations (see "Structure of siren warning systems" below).

Structure of siren warning systems
Siren warning systems are always customised. No two requirements are the same. Siren warning systems are therefore available in all sizes - from individual sirens, usually for alerting the fire brigade, to regional and nationwide siren warning systems.

Special requirements for nationwide siren warning systems:
- Locally varying hazard potential
- No uniform terrain conditions and climate zones
- Populated and less densely populated areas
- Areas better and less well connected to the power supply or communications infrastructure
- Multi-level control infrastructures with regional and national centres
- Scalable triggering from individual sirens via defined groups to all sirens in the country
- Possibility of integrating private warning systems, for example in industrial buildings, mines or dams
- Can be integrated into national warning concepts
- Economical to operate
- Easy to maintain and durable
